We suggest the implementation of prospective investigations and/or implementation of such programs for the betterment of health in the overweight, middle-aged female population. While there was improvement when participating in both diet and diet and exercise programs, combining diet and exercise showed the best results. We suggest that even in a relatively short-term weight loss program, there was improvement in all anthropometric, biochemical, physiological, physical, and psychological parameters. This study presents an initial picture of this type of weight loss program, and future prospective studies should be done with larger samples. Prior to the end of the program, all participants were informed about how to continue dieting and exercising, as well as how to continue to lose weight. One of the main perks of the programs was that during the 8 weeks, the participants could consult with the sports instructor (in the exe + nutr and exercise groups) or nutritionist (exe + nutr and nutrition groups) at any time. We found that by losing weight, the women participating in either the exe + nutr or nutrition program also increased their well-being, self-efficacy, body image, and self-image, especially among the exe + nutr group (Table 3). The main purpose of this study was to strengthen the idea that the use of diet together with exercising for the purpose of losing weight is better than solely dieting, or solely exercising, because when combining exercising and eating a healthier diet, there is an improvement to more aspects of life and at larger scales. This study also measured the psychological variables that play major roles in losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition, a paired t-test analysis was executed to analyze the difference before and after the weight loss program. The women arrived at the fitness center following a newspaper advertisement about a weight loss program. There were 199 overweight women aged 40–60 years who participated in the weight loss program. Increased fat mass also reduces flexibility and range of motion, especially in the shoulders, hips, knees, and vertebrate column.8,9 Błaszczyk et al.10 showed that overweight people are less stable and tend to fall more than people with a healthy weight due to the changes in the central mass of their body.
Participants had significant weight loss compared to controls, averaging between 1 and 20 pounds, with an average weight loss of 5 pounds overall, and were more likely to have lost 5% of their total body weight at 12 to 18 months. The programs studied lasted between 12 and 24 months, and involved at least 12 sessions (face-to-face, group meetings, or web-based). Just this fall, they tackled obesity, with the goal of identifying effective ways we in primary care can help people to lose weight. They identify big medical problems, review the research, and translate it into action plans (called practice recommendations) for doctors like me. Weight loss meal plans are designed to make your life easier by providing pre-portioned meals that save time and help reduce the temptation to overeat. These kits come with pre-portioned ingredients and step-by-step recipes, making it easier to prepare healthy meals at home. Many weight loss meal delivery services also feature rotating menus, giving you access to a wide variety of menu options each week. Deliveries can be tailored by meal size, frequency, dietary restrictions, food preferences, and much more. The best meal delivery service for weight loss depends on your specific needs.

There are also grill-ready meals that are pre-portioned and pre-seasoned for outdoor cooking. There are meal kits, which include various recipes and all the ingredients you need to make them, and heat-and-eat meals, so you can mix it up depending on how much time you want to spend in the kitchen that week. All nutrition facts are listed on the site, so if you want to track your calorie intake or other macros, you can input them to a tracking app. “I’ve had repeat meals a handful of times in 10 months and it’s because I love them,” says one GGR team member who used Home Chef for a year. The meal delivery service received a perfect 5-out-of-5 stars on portion sizes, taste, and the ordering process. GGR Performance Editor Anthony O’Reilly, a certified nutrition coach, has tried Home Chef, and says it hits it out of the park with each and every box. Home Chef is a meal delivery service that gives you options between meal kits, heat-and-eat meals, and grill-ready selections. Nix also says the color coding system may be triggering for those who have a history of disordered eating as well. If you opt for an annual plan, it’s $209 for the year, which breaks down to a little over $17 per month. There is only one plan option, but you can choose what type of commitment you make. “Dietitians don’t hold the philosophy that foods are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and Noom’s color coding does exactly that,” Destini says. Additionally, registered dietitian Destini Moody says that this approach can cause problematic behaviors and thought patterns in the future. People who are trying to navigate nutrition for the first time may confuse the concept a little bit.
You also don't have to give up on an eating pattern completely, says Zenker. Clear any major dietary changes with your doc or registered dietitian. Will you be able to stay consistent with the diet as long as you intend to? It also lacks variety in food groups and types of foods, making it harder to meet micronutrient and fiber needs, she adds. The military diet is a calorie-restricted diet that’s named after its strict and disciplined approach, says Zenker. Not all carbs are equal and learning to incorporate complex carbs into your diet can be beneficial in the long run. The diet also encourages a lot of cooking at home—and that can lower the risk that sneaky sources of calories will make their way onto your plate, she adds. On the other hand, because carbs are eliminated early in the diet, some people may experience headache, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, and constipation, says Barrett. Also similarly to keto, the Atkins diet targets diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure prevention because research shows Atkins dieters reduce their levels of triglycerides, per Mayo Clinic. Followers are encouraged to limit their carb intake—which includes limiting high-starch veggies and high-sugar fruits—and focus on foods that are rich in nutrients and fiber. The Atkins diet is similar to keto in that it’s very low-carb, Cording says. Low sodium intake is the goal, but it can be challenging since there are often unknown levels of added salt in non-home cooked meals, says Barrett. Cording says she’s also a big fan, noting that it’s really similar to a Mediterranean diet. It zeroes in on fruits, veggies, low-fat and non-fat dairy products, and low-sodium foods, while minimizing saturated fat and cholesterol. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet was originally created to help people lower their blood pressure. “If you’re not a drinker, you don’t have to start drinking red wine for the diet to be successful. By reducing added sugars and processed foods, you minimize your consumption of saturated fats, which are linked to high cholesterol and chronic illness. “It’s also good for satiety and emphasizes walking and activity as part of the diet.” The diet also allows for a glass of red wine a day, but recommends that followers limit red meat.

This includes a written (and for non-clinical and clinical programs, oral) description of the risks and benefits of treatments and the opportunity to ask questions. . .. Information should include. . ." The exceptions is the New York City Consumer Bill of Rights where, except for an affirmatively disclosed warning about the risk of rapid weight loss, the consumer is informed of his/her right to receive certain information upon request. Both NIH and the Institute of Medicine have identified information that providers should disclose about their programs. Consent orders entered in those cases include remedies that require substantiation for weight loss or weight maintenance claims, disclosures triggered by maintenance claims ("For many dieters, weight loss is temporary"), disclosure of total costs, and prohibitions against misrepresenting staff credentials. To get this redefined message out to consumers, all those with responsibilities in the weight-loss arena need to partner with diet program providers in changing the definition of success. To that end, Dr. Vash suggested an action plan consisting of a public health campaign geared to adolescents, strict accountability for advertising claims and the collection of industry data, school program incentives, increased research, and the creation and use of economic incentives. While subgroup sample size in this exploratory analysis may have been limiting, directionally, all OPT participants in the overweight category lost weight. In the OPT group, however, those in the overweight category lost more weight than those in higher BMI categories. For OPT, coaching appeared to be an important factor as a significant correlation was found between the number of coaching calls completed and weight change (i.e., those who participated in more coaching sessions lost more weight). Some studied real customers in a more intense weight control center setting 25, 27, 28. Of note, the weight increase was only evident in participants 20, 21. Interestingly, nearly one‐third of the OPT participants reported increasing their exercise (documented in coaching notes; data not reported) during this time frame which may have contributed to this increase in lean mass. This weight increase in the OPT group was accompanied by a concomitant increase in lean mass and a continued decline in total and abdominal fat mass and waist circumference. Weight declined in MED and OPT groups throughout the 16‐week study period, except for a modest weight increase between weeks 12 and 16 in the OPT group. Two mild AEs judged to be probably related to the study diet (abdominal bloating and decrease in bowel movement frequency) occurred in one MED participant. Four mild adverse events judged to be definitely related to the study diet (more frequent, looser or softer bowel movements) occurred in two MED participants. The four Serious Adverse Events (knee surgery and tonsillectomy in OPT group, renal failure in MED group, and acute transient ischemic attack in Control) were judged to be not related to the study diet. Both the MED and OPT groups lost significantly more absolute fat mass compared to Control at week 16 (Table 2) and all earlier time points (p 3), with fat making up the majority of the total body mass lost (75.0% and 87.1% for MED and OPT, respectively). Mean weight change at 16 weeks was also calculated using multiple imputation (MI) or Last Observation Carried Forward (LOCF) to account for missing data. MITT population; the numbers of participants with weight data at each time point are shown below the graph.

On a short-term basis, VLCDs are relatively effective, with weight losses of approximately 15 to 30 kg over 12 to 20 weeks being reported in a number of studies (Anderson et al., 1992, 1999; Apfelbaum et al., 1987; Atkinson, 1989; Fisler and Drenick, 1987; Kanders and Blackburn, 1994). To achieve this goal, VLCDs usually provide 1.2 to 1.5 g of protein/kg of desirable body weight in the formula or as fish, lean meat, or fowl. Astrup and coworkers (2002) examined four meta-analyses of weight change that occurred on intervention trials with ad libitum low-fat diets. For example, Sheppard and colleagues (1991) reported that after 1 year, obese women who reduced their fat intake from approximately 39 percent to 22 percent of total caloric intake lost 3.1 kg of body weight, while women who reduced their fat intake from 38 percent to 36 percent of total calories lost only 0.4 kg. Low-fat diets have been one of the most commonly used treatments for obesity for many years (Astrup, 1999; Astrup et al., 1997; Blundell, 2000; Castellanos and Rolls, 1997; Flatt, 1997; Kendall et al., 1991; Pritikin, 1982). Although these diets are prescribed to be eaten ad libitum, total daily energy intake tends to be reduced as a result of the monotony of the food choices, other prescripts of the diet, and an increased satiety effect of protein. Authors of books aimed at the lay public have proposed advantages of high protein diets, including that eating a high-protein, low-CHO diet produces a “near-euphoric” state of maximal physical and mental performance (Sears and Lawren, 1998). All of the studies resulted in maintenance of significant weight loss after 2 to 5 years of follow-up. One study found that women lost more weight between the third and sixth months of the plan, but men lost most of their weight by the third month (Heber et al., 1994). Meal replacement programs are commercially available to consumers for a reasonably low cost. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends such diets as the “standard treatment” for clinical trials of new weight-loss drugs, to be used by both the active agent group and the placebo group (FDA, 1996). This type of diet is composed of the types of foods a patient usually eats, but in lower quantities. Unless the program participant lives alone, nutrition management is rarely effective without the involvement of family members.
We picked Noom as our overall best program for weight loss; we like its daily lessons, structured tracking, and built-in coaching along with community support. The combination of customized meal plans, low‑impact home workouts, symptom‑aware education, and optional coaching creates a program that feels genuinely individualized. Pete thinks that Simple is a great choice for anyone wanting to try intermittent fasting with additional support for their nutrition or weight loss journey. “When I downloaded Simple, I was prompted to answer a series of questions about my age, current weight, dietary preference, eating habits, sleep patterns, activity level, and goals. “The program doesn’t necessarily provide a set meal plan, but it includes plenty of health-conscious recipes that are good. Prioritizing quality sleep and stress management sets you up for utmost success with both your physical and mental health. Therefore, achieving efficient fat burning requires a steady supply of protein in your diet. In the absence of adequate protein, your body shifts into a mode where it breaks down muscle and tissues to source protein, trumping the fat metabolism process. A balance of macronutrients—protein, carbohydrates, and fats—deserves attention in your daily meals. You can also dry brush, exercise, and sit in a sauna. Then move up by adding handheld weights. Strength training keeps our bodies strong and has a higher impact on body fat than cardio workouts. During menopause, it’s not uncommon for women to lose some bone density and muscle mass. Not only do drinks tend to be full of empty calories, but alcohol also stops your body from burning fat temporarily. Plus, it hurts your chances of losing weight. Protein is the king of macronutrients and is most important for keeping excess weight off in midlife. Sleep is intricately involved in your hormones, your weight, and how much fat you hold onto. There has got to be education on what are appropriate goals in getting people to understand that there are biological roots, social/cultural roots, and behavioral roots to the problem of controlling overweight. Generally, what we do know about consumer behavior is that as many persons are attempting to lose weight (40 percent of women, 25 percent of men) as are actively seeking to maintain current weight (30 percent each) (Schlundt). Research on consumer behavior and motivation in the weight loss area is mostly sparse and dated, according to panelists who spoke on the subject (Heaton, Pappas). For most people, no amount of weight loss will transform their bodies to look like models or movie stars. Much of the motivation for dieting is based upon a dissatisfaction with appearance that cannot be fixed by dieting. The panel heard anecdotal evidence (Farzan, Pappas) of program counselors offering inaccurate nutritional advice and the substitution of atypical testimonials when shoppers asked for outcome information. According to the research conducted by several panelists, a few programs were better than others in providing some of the information at issue, but no program provided all of the information, with information as to program efficacy (outcome information) the least available. The consumer panelists were also in agreement about the overall failure of commercial programs to provide such information. We should at least have the same level of disclosure for the weight loss industry as we have for car leasing. What has been the result of recent efforts (post-1990) to deal with deception in the weight loss marketplace?
This chapter has provided an overview of the many weight-loss programs, which are organized for convenience into three major categories, and the five broad approaches to treatment used by them. With weight loss comes improvement in the comorbid conditions that often accompany obesity. Because of its unique nature, the special requirements of participating patients, and the characteristics of the services implied in this type of program, the surgical treatment of obesity is a special subcategory of clinical programs. Nevertheless, drugs should be used as only one component of a comprehensive weight-reduction program that includes attention to diet, activity, and behavior modification. A National Institutes of Health workshop on the pharmacological treatment of obesity concluded that "obesity drugs produce short-term weight loss and may remain effective for extended periods of time in some patients" (Atkinson and Hubbard, 1994). It should be noted that patients most appropriate for drug therapy include those with comorbidities (e.g., hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemias, and sleep apnea) that can be diminished with weight loss and those at high risk for obesity-related comorbidities. We suggest that these drugs be judged effective if they can produce small but medically significant weight losses and be used for maintenance of weight loss. Furthermore, there is an expectation that drugs will continue to lower body weight until a desirable weight is reached and will maintain the weight loss even after the drug is discontinued (Atkinson and Hubbard, 1994). Modifying the cues often involves strategies such as limiting eating to specific times and places, buying food when not hungry, and laying out exercise clothing to encourage a regular habit of physical activity. Designed to generate a larger and more rapid weight loss than low-calorie diets, they are usually prescribed for 12 to 16 weeks (NTF, 1993). VLCDs are generally limited to moderately and severely obese individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30 who have failed to lose weight by more conventional methods, but they may be appropriate for patients with a BMI of 27 to 30 who have a comorbid condition. They are medically supervised and administered by a multidisciplinary team including physicians, behavioral therapists, dietitians, exercise physiologists, and nurses. Most VLCD programs are based in hospitals or clinics and include the commercial programs Opti-fast, Medifast, New Direction, and Health Management Resources (HMR) (Dwyer and Lu, 1993). These diet products are specially formulated powders or foods designed as meal replacements. A low-calorie diet utilizing only regular foods may require vitamin-mineral supplementation to meet the nutritional needs of the client. Balanced-deficit diets provide 1,200 or more kcal/day and are usually nutritionally adequate, providing at least the minimum recommended number of servings from all major food groups. We have provided characteristics of specific, well-known weight-loss programs in Table 3-1. However, these programs are often managed or advised by qualified and licensed health-care providers. The qualifying characteristic of these programs is that they rely substantially on variably trained counselors (who are not health-care providers by our definition) to provide services to the individual client.

We depended on the nutrition information contained in each app’s database or we entered nutrition information for foods not contained in the database. We tested all five apps by recording meals over the course of five weeks, entering food items into each one at the conclusion of each meal. During our pre-testing research, we found there are many different weight loss apps available for download. The Premium app costs $40 per year (billed annually), which is the least expensive of the weight loss apps we tested. An important, but often overlooked, capability of a great weight loss app is its ability to let a user make changes quickly and easily; the LoseIt! Entering our food consumption was a simple matter of just touching the “Add” button for the meal, and then entering the details of each food item at the top of the screen. To find the best weight loss app, we tested five candidates over the course of five weeks. These are all beneficial tools in an individual’s weight loss journey.” “In addition to tracking your food intake,” continues Martinez, “many offer support forums, recipes and an ability to sync with other apps such as fitness trackers and smart scales. Just like keeping a diary of your eating habits, you could also keep a diary for a week to see how much physical activity you’re doing. Your diary might begin to reveal a pattern, such as you choose certain foods or drinks depending on where you are or how you are feeling. A good way to do this is to split them into ‘energy in’ (diet) and ‘energy out’ (movement). If you have been on crash diets for several years or finding it difficult, seek help from a dietitian. According to a review published in the British Journal of Nutrition3, the Mediterranean diet can also help with body weight management, especially in those who are getting adequate amounts of protein. However, if you can follow the Mediterranean diet successfully, there’s also evidence2 that it can be superior to low-fat diets when it comes to long-term weight loss results. “In order for this to work for weight loss, it would be up to you to determine the quantity of food you eat, says Perry Nix, MS, RD, LD. The Mediterranean diet isn’t a weight loss diet per se, but there is evidence that shows that following a calorie-restricted version can promote weight loss, especially when combined with physical activity. “Their meals contain anywhere from 350 to 900 calories, leaving it up to you to choose meals based on your personal calorie needs and food preferences,” says Perry Nix, MS, RD, LD. In Yancy’s study , although participants were randomized to ‘Choice’ or ‘No Choice’ groups, food preferences of the participants were assessed. Interestingly, in this study, it was the group that did not have a strong preference that lost the most weight. Another study , which was based on qualitative feedback decided to use three categories to describe preference, treatment congruent, treatment incongruent, and no strong preference, as above descried. One study advised those with a strong aversion to one diet, not to enroll . Two of these studies excluded participants with a slight or no preference for one diet over another 25,26. Only two studies measured dietary composition and two studies measured physical activity and there was no difference between interventions for either variable. These data were then summarised for participants in the ‘Choice’ group and used to indicate with which of the two diet options individual preferences aligned. One study assessed food preference while using the Geiselman Food Preference Questionnaire at the screening visit. Prior to and independently of randomisation into dietary strategy arms, five studies assessed participant treatment preference 23,25,26,27,28. Two studies offered their ‘Choice’ participants the option to change dietary strategy 24,29 at an intermediate point in the intervention with five participants in both cohorts opting to change. Of the studies included, six used two dietary strategies—low-carbohydrate vs. low-fat 23,24; group therapy vs. individual therapy ; vegetarian vs. standard omnivorous diet ; self-control vs. determination raising ; and, group vs. telephone contact .

By utilizing various strategies in an approach for weight loss patients, it is possible to maximize treatment adherence. Accountability can be maximized by creating support groups with additional educational sessions, which can subsequently increase treatment adherence . Caregivers often consider how to best treat patients with more facilitators to treatment while avoiding barriers that make weight loss treatment difficult . Social platforms can be used as an adjunct to professional interventions, as these platforms can provide information and a sense of camaraderie for patients who are attempting to lose weight. The additional aid from physicians to adjust the intervention to each patient’s lifestyle promoted sustained dietary change . For example, the researchers found that participants in the Nutrisystem program achieved at least 3.8 percent greater weight loss after three months than people who were not enrolled, but the program lacked solid evidence of its long-term effectiveness. The 11 programs evaluated included Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Health Management Resources (HMR), Medifast, Optifast, Atkins, Slimfast and three Internet-based offerings (The Biggest Loser Club, eDiets and Lose It!). Only 39 studies of 11 weight-loss programs met the researchers' criteria to be included in the review. In this review study, the researchers looked for published studies on weight-loss programs that were rigorous, long-term randomized controlled trials, which are considered the highest-quality data to evaluate whether a program works. The study showed that for the majority of commercial weight-loss programs out there, researchers don't know whether or not they work, said lead author Dr. Kimberly Gudzune, a weight-loss specialist and an assistant professor of medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. By limiting carbs, the liver produces ketones which puts the body in a state of ketosis, causing it to burn fat instead of glucose for energy. An article published in StatPearls examined the physiology and history of the ketogenic diet. When carb intake is this low, the body depletes its glucose stores and starts producing ketones from stored fat to use as an alternate fuel source. Committing to the lifestyle change may yield benefits but individual success may vary. A balanced, practical approach aims to improve overall health and well-being.
In the ITT data set (Figure 2), members of the control group lost 2.0% of body weight on average at t1 in comparison to baseline, while members of the intervention group lost 2.3% on average. First, we analyzed the primary outcome “weight loss in % to baseline” over all three time points separated by group. In both groups and for each time point a mean value of 2.5 (except 2.4 in t1, IG) was observed, indicating the occurrence of social support in relation to weight management between “sometimes” and “often”. Considering the absolute body weight in kg, the mean changes from time point to time point turned out to be even smaller. One sixth of the sample categorized itself as smoking and every tenth person reported having tried to lose weight earlier. All models were adjusted for the a priori defined covariates subjective health, comorbidity impairments, mental disorders and social support . Participation was only possible in one of the three coaches (smoking cessation, weight loss or increasing fitness); at the same time, however, members of the WLC could use modules of the fitness coach as well. In case of pre-existing conditions or health impairments, subjects required a medical assessment for suitability in advance. Inclusion criteria were healthy persons of any sex, aged 18 years and older regardless of their health insurance. After completing the baseline questionnaire, the online RCT participants were given access to their selected health program. Since the WLC is developed and improved continuously, fixed versions of the programs from the end of December 2019, which were not changed during the observation period, were used for the RCT. Furthermore, we assumed that this weight loss is significantly greater in the IG than in the CG (Hypothesis 2). For this, we compared an interactive web-based health coach (IG) with a passive web-based health information platform (CG). However, this support is often limited to the duration of the program and it remains unclear how sustainable the interventions are afterwards, when personal supervision is withdrawn. After 3 months, the IGs showed a significantly greater weight loss compared to the CG but not between the IGs. Both groups showed significant effects after 12 and 24 weeks in terms of weight loss, BMI and waist circumference compared to baseline .
The diet emphasizes foods like fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, beans and whole grains, with some smaller amounts of red meat and dairy. She also cautions that some vegans can end up eating more carbs than is beneficial, which can cause blood sugar and weight control issues for some people. "Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Essential amino acids can only come from food and cannot be made by the body. Methionine is a common amino acid deficiency in vegans that is needed for brain and liver function," Dr. Peter says. "People who follow this type of diet see benefits in weight control, as well as a reduced risk for Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease," Gorin says. This means the diet is made up of mainly fruits, vegetables, grains and beans and nixes meat, fish, eggs, dairy and any other food products that contain any ingredients that come from animals. Whether followed for health or ethical reasons, a vegan diet is a popular diet that removes all animal products from the diet. Other people that Gorin says the diet will not work for is those with a history of disordered eating, people with kidney disease or a history of experiencing kidney stones and people with Type 1 diabetes. Low-carb diets cause your body's insulin levels to go down, which causes your body to flush excess water and sodium. One of the effects of the Keto diet is lower insulin levels, which plays an important role in how your body regulates sodium. The goal of the keto diet is to restrict carbs enough that your body goes into ketosis, which is a state where your body begins to burn fat instead of sugar for energy.

Some telehealth programs offer online forums or support groups where you can share your experiences, exchange tips, and celebrate successes with fellow participants. For people who are vegetarian who rely on a lot of high-carb foods like pasta and crackers, transforming their diet in this way could lead to weight loss, though it can feel very restrictive and put you at risk of nutrient deficiencies.
